ประโยคนี้เป็น คำแนะนำให้นักศึกษาที่กำลังจะเข้าเรียนในชั้น Freshman หรือ ชั้นปีที่ 1 ของมหาวิทยาลัยระดับ Top ของโลก หลายๆมหาวิทยาลัย ไม่ว่าจะเป็น มหาวิทยาลัยใน IVY League อย่าง Princton University, Yale University รวมไปถึง Harvard University หรือแม้กระทั่งมหาวิทยาลัยชั้นนำในทวีปยุโรปด้วยเช่นกัน
แล้ว เพื่อนๆสงสัยกันไหมคะว่า Gap Year คืออะไร ? ทำไมมหาวิทยาลัยชั้นนำเหล่านั้นถึงแนะนำให้นักเรียนควรมี Gap Year ก่อนเข้ามาเรียนในชั้นปีที่ 1
Gap Year คืออะไร?
Gap Year นั้น ถ้าเล่าให้ฟังอย่างง่ายๆ คือ การที่นักเรียนที่เรียนจบระดับ High School แล้ว พักไปทำอย่างอื่นก่อนเข้าเรียนมหาวิทยาลัย 1-2 ปี ซึ่งกิจกรรมที่เด็กๆทำนั้น อาจจะเป็น กิจกรรมการค้นหาตัวเอง, การไปทำกิจกรรมเพื่อสังคม หรือ แม้กระทั่งการออกไปเที่ยวรอบโลก
อ่านดูแล้ว ดูเหมือนเป็นกิจกรรมที่ไม่ได้มีความสำคัญอะไรมากมายใช่ไหมคะ? คล้ายๆกับจะเป็นการพักผ่อนซะมากกว่า แต่รู้ไหมคะว่า มหาวิทยาลัยชื่อดังหลายๆแห่งนั้น ให้ความสำคัญกับการที่เด็กๆ Take Gap Year มาก ถึงกับมีการออก Gap Year Program ให้กับนักเรียนที่ได้รับการตอบรับจากมหาวิทยาลัยแล้ว และสนใจที่จะ Take Gap Year อย่างเช่นที่ ที่ Princton University มีการออกโปรแกรม Princeton’s Bridge Year Program ที่เป็นกิจกรรม 9 เดือน ให้นักเรียนที่กำลังจะเข้าเรียนไปทำกิจกรรมเพื่อสังคมในต่างประเทศ เป็นต้น
ทำไม Gap Year ถึงมีความสำคัญ?
“ลงทุนมัม” ว่า Gap Year จะช่วยให้ นักเรียนที่ปกติใช้เวลากว่า 50% ในแต่ละวัน ในการเรียน และเป็นอย่างนี้ต่อเนื่องมานานกว่า 12 ปีในช่วง ประถม และ มัธยม มีเวลาที่จะพักและใช้เวลาอยู่กับตัวเอง เพื่อค้นหาสิ่งที่ตัวเองสนใจจริงๆ รวมไปถึง การออกไปทดลองทำกิจกรรมต่างๆ อาจจะเป็นการทำกิจกรรมเพื่อสังคม หรือ ทำงานในต่างประเทศ หรือ การออกไปทดลองทำงานหรือท่องเที่ยวในสถานที่ต่างๆที่ไม่เคยไป ทดลองใช้ชีวิตในโลกแห่งการทำงาน หรือ โลกของผู้ใหญ่จริงๆ เพื่อเตรียมพร้อมที่จะเข้าสู่โลกของการเรียนระดับมหาวิทยาลัยที่เมื่อจบแล้วก็จะไปสู่โลกของการทำงานอย่างเต็มตัว
การ Take Gap Year นั้น ไม่จำเป็นจะต้องเป็นสำหรับเด็กที่ได้รับตอบรับจากมหาวิทยาลัยแล้วเท่านั้นที่จะมี Gap Year ได้ แต่นักเรียนที่เตรียมตัวที่จะสมัครเข้าเรียนในมหาวิทยาลัย หากเราเลือกกิจกรรม Gap Year ที่น่าสนใจ ก็ยังสามารถที่จะทำให้ Profile ในการเข้ามหาวิทยาลัยของเราดียิ่งขึ้นได้อีกด้วย
สำหรับประเทศไทย หรือในเอเชีย นั้น Gap Year อาจจะยังไม่ได้เป็นที่นิยมมาก แต่ก็เป็น Trend ที่น่าสนใจ และเป็นตัวเลือกหนึ่งให้ลูกๆของเราในช่วงเปลี่ยนผ่านจากมัธยมไปสู่มหาวิทยาลัยที่ดีค่ะ
ตัวอย่าง Gap Year Program ที่น่าสนใจ ก็มีหลายหลายโปรแกรม เช่น การไปดูแลเด็ก, การทำงานเพื่อสังคม, การทำกิจกรรมอนุรักษ์ธรรมชาติ, การสอนหนังสือให้เด็กๆที่ยากไร้ เป็นต้น ทั้งนี้ขึ้นอยู่กับความสนใจของนักเรียนแต่ละคนค่ะ
