Phonics เป็นเทคนิค ที่จะช่วย ฝึกการอ่านภาษาอังกฤษ ให้กับเด็กๆ โดยจะให้ เด็กๆจำวิธีการออกเสียง ของ ตัวอักษรแต่ละตัว ซึ่ง จะแตกต่างจากที่ คุณพ่อ คุณแม่ อย่างพวกเราเรียนตอนเด็กๆ เพราะ ตอนพวกเราเด็กๆ เราจะท่อง ตัวอักษร A-Z โดยที่ A จะอ่านว่า เอ, B อ่านว่า บี ซึ่งเป็น การท่องชื่อเรียกของแต่ละตัวอักษร ไม่เกี่ยวข้องกับการอ่านคำ
แต่ ถ้าเป็นยุคของลูกๆของเราในยุคนี้ ตัวอักษร A จะไม่ได้อ่านว่า เอ แต่จะอ่าน ว่า แอะ ซึ่งเป็นการอ่านตัวอักษรตามเสียงของตัวอักษรนั้นๆ และ การที่เด็กจำเสียงของตัวอักษรแต่ละตัวได้นั้น จะทำให้เด็กๆสามารถสะกดคำ และ อ่านคำออกได้
Phonics ที่นิยมใช้สอนในโรงเรียน มักจะใช้ หลักสูตรของ Jolly Phonics ที่ออกแบบหลักสูตรมาให้เด็กๆ เรียนเสียง Phonics ควบคู่ไปกับ เพลง และ ท่าทางของเสียงนั้นๆ ซึ่งจะช่วยทำให้เด็กๆ สนุกไปกับการเรียนและจำได้ง่ายขึ้น
โดยเสียงของ Jolly Phonics จะมีทั้งหมด 42 เสียง และ ลำดับการเรียน ก็จะไม่ได้เรียน จาก A-Z ตามลำดับตัวอักษรนะคะ แต่จะเรียงจาก เสียงที่ง่ายและใช่บ่อย ค่อยๆไล่ไปดังนี้
ข้อดี ของการเรียน Phonics ก็คือ เด็กๆจะ เริ่มอ่านภาษาอังกฤษ และ สะกดคำได้ จากการออกเสียง โดยไม่ต้องจำตัวสะกดของคำศัพท์ได้ และ ไม่ต้องรู้ความหมายของคำศัพท์นั้นๆ ด้วย ถ้าเด็กๆเจอคำศัพท์ใหม่ๆ ที่ไม่เคยเจอมาก่อน ก็เพียงแค่ ทดลองออกเสียงตาม Phonics ไปทีละตัวอักษร แล้วนำมารวมกัน ก็จะได้สามารถอ่านคำนั้นๆได้
